Head of School Message
| Mission & Vision

Our mission statement best communicates what we are about here at East New York Prep:

“East New York Prep addresses the specific needs and challenges of children in East New York to ensure students achieve or exceed grade-level mastery of academic content, knowledge ad skills.  We provide a rigorous and NYS Standards aligned curriculum, disciplined environment, and supportive community where our students are academically and socially prepared to excel in demanding college preparatory schools.”

We are a school committed to the family, embracing the notion that the school is an extension of the home, and therefore we must work together to achieve success. It is our belief that all children have the ability to achieve greatness and become the person they dream of becoming. “I wish I could be….when I grow up,” means that as an educational institution we have the task of mentoring each student, guiding them, helping them to develop the self-confidence and discipline they need to do anything they set out to accomplish. It is a philosophy that I have subscribed to for a long time and will instill in each child we serve.

At East New York Prep, every faculty member thrives in knowing that they are not only educators, but also mentors to such an impressionable group of young minds. The School Leadership works closely with faculty and staff to ensure that all adults at our school serve as models for young people, holding ourselves to the same high expectations to which we hold our students, living the values we instill in our children.

As Head of School it is my job to listen to those who surround me each and every day: the students, parents, faculty, and community. By listening to all the stakeholders, I have developed a school model that I believe is truly responsive to each family’s needs and desires for their child.

At the heart of our educational philosophy are our school-wide values. These values are embedded in the acronym THINK:

Tolerance – As a community, we respect and embrace our differences for the collective good.
Hard-work – We welcome the challenge of hard work as a means to a fruitful end.
Integrity – We approach all situations with straightforward, upright honesty.
No-excuses
– We will neither make nor accept any excuse for not doing our very best everyday!
Knowledge – We understand that knowledge is power and seek to build a powerful community of learners.

We know that selecting where to send your child, to invest your support, or to teach is a decision not made lightly. Please trust that you have selected an institution wedded to the notion of doing ‘whatever it takes’ to ensure each child’s success.

I thank you for your support and look forward to our journey to excellence!

Sincerely,
Sheila Joseph, Esquire
Founder & Head of School

THIRD GRADERS AT EAST NEW YORK PREP EXCEL ON STATE EXAMS

This academic year, our third grade scholars took the Mathematics and English Language Arts exam and became the first class at East New York Prep to take state-mandated standardized tests. The results were released recently and I am proud to share that all of the third graders met or exceeded the learning standard for the 2009 math assessment according to test scores released by the New York State Board of Regents yesterday. The 100% performance on the math exam makes ENYP the highest performing independent charter school in the subject in New York City.

Fewer than 13% NYC schools with third graders taking the exam had 100% of their students score level 3 or 4. ENYP is one of two schools in District 23 to have 100% performance and beat the district level 3 or 4 performance by nearly 19 percentage points (District 23: 81.4%).

This testing system, which was established in 2006, measures how well students perform against a core curriculum for instruction. Although controversial, standardized tests help to establish what students should know and be able to do by the time they graduate high school. The exams help students identify skills they’ve mastered or need to improve and help schools and school districts figure out how their pupils compare to the peers in other schools and districts. The exams provide uniformity that holds educators accountable for providing students with skills that are relevant and useable in life. When English Language Arts test results were recently released, the results showed that 86% of ENYP third graders scored level 3 or 4. ENYP is the highest performing independent charter school in Brooklyn and fourth overall. ENYP ranked first in the city amongst independent charter schools taking the ELA for the first time.
